helluoliborum: (In The Pages of A Book)
Is there anything better than when it's cold and wet outside, and you're in a blanket nest on the couch with the person you love?

Well, almost. It's when you're there, in front of a burning fire, with a good book and a steaming mug of hot chocolate (not just any hot chocolate - Galaxy toasted marshamallow flavour with a dusting of salted caramel sugar dusted on top), and some ginger nut biscuits to dunk in it. It is divine!

The dog is asleep on my feet, one of the cats on my lap and the other on Raleigh's. They are playing on their Switch, Mario Kart from the sounds of things. I have some Prokofiev playing - Piano Concerto No. 3 in C, Op. 26: 1. Andante - Allegro - and I have a good book on my Kindle.

I'm reading The Enigma Game by Elizabeth Wein which isn't my usual type of book but I picked up Code Name Verity on Borrowbox the other day, discovered it was part of a series but none of the library resources had any of the others so I picked them up. After all, what else is a book glutton supposed to do? According to Raleigh, return the book I picked up and chose something else. Hah!

All in all, it's a wonderful comfortable pleasant way to spend an evening and I am a happy old queer.

It has taken me two or three days to find a blog name. All the very cool literary word related names had been taken and I didn't want to resort to using my name, but I did end up with Helluo Liborum - which essentially means the book glutton, or an obsessive and insatiable bookworm. Admittedly, it's a both a very cool blog name and an accurate description of yours truly.

I also looked at but couldn't get:
vellichor - the strange wistfulness of used bookshops
florilegium - a volume of writings
omnilegent - reading or having read everything
elucubration - reading or studying by candlelight or, as Shakespeare put it, a candle-waster.
tsundoku - the act of buying a book but not reading it, and letting it pile up with other unread books
ballycumber - one of six half-read books lying in your bed (although I'm trying to get out of that habit!)
bibliobibuli - someone who reads too much
and, one of my favourite words of all time librocubicularist - one who reads in bed.

I love words. They're amazing. And literary words just feel right. Obviously everyone agrees with me since they're all taken.

Hi! I'm Jack Quinn Magnus, but you can call me Jack. I'm transmasc, non-binary, queer, in love with Raleigh since 2005, and my pronouns are hey/they. Welcome to my blog. I will - shockingly enough - be talking about books here (and games and tv and movies and music and anything else that pops into my head)

I am, as stated already, a book-glutton. I'm an eclectic reader and an enthusiastic fan of my local library. I read fiction and non-fiction, and love history, historical fiction, science and science-fiction. I read everywhere (though my favourite place is in bed) and always have at least one book on me. I read paperback and ebooks, and listen to audiobooks. I'm not picky.

I'm a civil service manager by day and a superhero fan and gamer by night. My favourite colour is blue. I enjoy gymnastics, hockey and ice-skating. I'm a huge nerd over DC Extended Universe, Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate and would run away with either The Doctor or Amanda Tapping in a heartbeat. I enjoy reading in a cozy room with a fire burning while drinking hot chocolate, playing board and video games, watching movies, baking & cooking and convincing the world classical music isn't boring!
